Do I Need A Personal Trainer?

I appreciate that personal trainers are still a mystery to most people, “what do they actually do?”, “will I get hammered like those contestants on the biggest loser?”

It’s difficult to assess whether you need a service if you don’t know enough about it!

I basically help clients take their vision, what they want for their body (how they want to look, feel, and move) and break it down into manageable weekly and daily tasks, usually split into training, nutrition/food intake, and lifestyle factors (stress, sleep, habits).

Essentially I help you get your desired result far quicker than you would get it alone. I’ve done all the training, applied it hundreds of times to myself and to other people, I’ve seen first hand what works, and what doesn’t. I’ve done courses, read books, watched hours of videos, and my clients get the juicy bits that work, without the hours of trawling through theory!

I’ve been into training myself since I was 16, I’m now 41, and I’ve been a full time trainer since 2009. I still train myself at the gym 3-4 times a week, and every session I see someone “going it alone” making countless mistakes in the gym, incorrect technique, resting for too long, not enough intensity, not enough sets of an exercise, pounding the treadmill, or slow and steady on the cross trainer for 45 minutes, training a bad posture - honestly the list could be huge.

This is merely to make a point in relation to the initial question, I actually applaud anyone that gets off their backside and starts training, and most of the members know I’m a pt so they know to ask for (and receive) free tips!

Coming back to the original question, do I need a personal trainer?

Well ask yourself these:

  • Do I want my desired result quickly and safely?

  • Am I self motivated/have a high level of self accountability?

  • Will I keep pushing on when it gets hard, or do I give up easily?

  • Do I know how to structure effective workouts that maximize my time in the gym?

  • Do I know how to structure my diet in a way I can still enjoy my food, whilst still dropping body fat?

  • Can I spot self sabotaging habits that will keep me stuck?

  • Do I know how to cycle workouts to keep my body progressing? (if you follow the same programme for too long your body will stop changing and results stall)

  • Do I know how to train exercise movements correctly and safely?

  • Do I know the lifestyle habits I must prioritse to maximize my results, and feel great?

  • Do I know how to work around any injuries or problem areas?

If you answered yes to more than 3 of these points above then I would say get started on your own, or maybe consider checking in with a good personal trainer to check technique etc.

If you answered no to these points, then yes, you need a personal trainer, or to put it another way, a personal trainer would be of benefit to you.
