This is a great example of what can be achieved when a few elements come together; especially consistency, perseverance, and professional insight from a good personal trainer.
If you aren’t familiar with this story then it goes like this:
Hollywood celebrity John Goodman (played Fred Flintstone) had allowed the busyness of life to get the better of him, and consequently was weighing in at nearly 29 stone,
This was the “enough” moment for John, he knew this needed to stop, and that he must make some big changes.
The first thing he did was significantly reduce his alcohol intake. This is a great place to start, most alcoholic drinks are loaded with excess calories that do nothing for you (quite the opposite actually) and will provoke snacking on salty food to balance the sweetness.
By the time John hired a personal trainer he had already lost 7 stone over 8 years, this is a great achievement, and also goes to show the importance of viewing your weight loss journey as a longer term commitment, not something you can try and achieve in a 3-6 month period.
Although you can make good inroads in 3-6 months, you need to commit to the process, and see it as a lifestyle change, otherwise there is a high likelihood that weight will come back!
The trainer that John took on highlights straight away that a planned approach was essential for John to continue his health and weight loss journey.
There are a lot of small changes that go into taking a client from point A to point B, and each one needs to be introduced at the right stage, and always builds on the last, so you get a cumulative effect.
Committing to weight loss with a personal trainer will get you a structured approach, one that is coherent and lays out what you need to do, and when, without you needing to really give it much thought.
Essentially we take the guesswork out of weight loss.
As a home based personal trainer my job is to make your weight loss as simple as possible, you have enough going on in your life, so if it was difficult you simply wouldn't have the extra capacity to do it.
Simple habits repeated over time always wins!
This article about John Goodman highlights this, he walked daily (10-12000 steps), eats a balanced diet (calculated by his trainer) and works out 6 times a week.
I’ll point out here that you can get excellent results without needing to workout 6 times a week. A lot of my clients get amazing results doing 2-4 workouts a week. A workout doesn’t have to involve a gym trip, or 1-2 hours, it can be done at home using just bodyweight in 15-20 minutes. This is something I help all my clients with, simple, quick and effective workouts they can do anywhere.
So weight loss with a personal trainer will be a smoother process, it's planned and carefully managed by someone that fully understands this process.
The final takeaway from this is age. John Goodman is 70 and looks fantastic, and I bet he sleeps better, has more energy, aches less, and generally feels lighter on his feet.
Do not let your age be a barrier to starting your weight loss or health journey. It’s never too late, my oldest client was 77 when she started.
